Brethren, for today's meditation I have chosen a word from the book of Psalm 118.
I called on the Lord in distress; The Lord answered me and set me in a broad (large) place.” — Psalm 118:5 (NKJV)
Life is full of moments that press us down—uncertainty, fear, and pressure from all sides. In these times, our natural response might be panic, retreat, or trying to fix things ourselves. But Psalm 118:5 reminds us of a greater power at work: when we cry out to God in our distress, He listens and responds.
This verse shows us two powerful truths:
1. God hears us in our lowest moments – Even when no one else understands our pain, God is near.
2. He sets us in a broad place — In biblical language, a “broad place” symbolizes freedom, safety, and peace. It is a place where you are no longer confined by fear or burdened by pressure. It’s not just about physical space. It represents inner peace, emotional relief, and spiritual freedom.
Today, if you find yourself anxious or overwhelmed, take a moment to pause and pray. Cry out to the Lord Jesus Christ, not just with polished words but with honest emotion. Trust that He hears you and is already working to bring you into a place of peace and freedom.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the powerful reminder in Your Word: “I called on the Lord in distress, and the Lord answered me and set me in a broad place.”
I lift up every heart that reads this today—may they be encouraged to call on You in their time of need, knowing that You hear and respond with love. In my own times of distress, help me to seek You first. Quiet my anxious thoughts, free my heart from worry, and fill me with the peace that only You can give. In Jesus’ name, Amen
